Why can't we Eliminate Mosquitoes?

You've been walking in the park, enjoying the peace of your evening stroll, when suddenly you hear an unmistakable sound. It's the high-pitched drone of a mosquito in flight. As you take a few more steps, the sound becomes louder and more persistent until you find yourself surrounded by a swarm of airborne pests. You wave your arms and slap at your skin to ward them off, but it does nothing. When the ordeal is over, painful welts cover your skin that will bother you for the next few days. It's surprising to know that mosquitoes cause more deaths than any other species currently known. Half the global population is at risk of catching diseases from a single mosquito bite. Over a million people die from mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever each year. These diseases usually affect people from poorer countries. Livestock and other animals are also vulnerable to these deadly diseases. You may wonder, why can't we just kill all of them? Never let

Could Sun Blocking be a Strategy to Combat Global Warming?

Could Sun Blocking be a Strategy to Combat Global Warming? Exploring Methods to Mitigate Global Warming

Introduction

Global warming and its dangerous effects on climate and living things have been a major concern for humans in recent years, though many solutions are possible to reduce the speeds of increasing temperatures, a potential strategy that scientists often called: the last resort, is to mitigate rising temperatures using sun blocking techniques. This article will explore the feasibility and potential methods of using sun blocking to reduce global temperatures.

Understanding Global Warming.

For those who don’t know, global warming refers to the long-term increase in the earth’s average surface temperature due to the accumulation of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, so an increase in temperature overnight is not global warming but an average increase in temperature for a year may be considered global warming. The primary greenhouse gas that is the main culprit responsible for global warming is carbon dioxide, also known as CO2. This gas is most commonly found in human exhaling, or large industrial mines producing carbon dioxide from smelting minerals. The effects of global warming are very clear, consequences such as melting glaciers and sea levels rising are only a few causes of this deadly occurrence.

Sun Blocking Techniques

After understanding the leading contributions to increasing temperatures and what global warming is, many proposed techniques are being used to reduce the accelerating speed of record-breaking temperatures. Because many people do not care to make an impact like driving less or not polluting, experts have resorted to trying a more affected method that takes more money but could be worth it. Sun blocking, also known as solar radiation management (srm) involves reducing the amount of sunlight that the earth gets, this can range from absorbing the sunlight or reflecting it. Several methods have been proposed such as stratospheric aerosol injection, marine cloud brightening, and space-based reflection and all of these methods will be examined later in the article.

Marine Cloud Brightening

Marine cloud brightening aims to enhance the reflectivity so that it can reflect more sunlight of the low-lying marine clouds. This is done by injecting seawater particles or other cloud condensation nuclei to help these marine clouds reflect more sunlight. Brighter clouds would reflect more sunlight into space, further reducing the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the earth’s surface. Studies indicate that marine cloud brightening could be a promising technique. However, further research is needed to understand its potential impact on cloud dynamics and observing precipitation patterns.

Stratospheric Aerosol Injection

This technique involves injecting reflective aerosol into the stratosphere to create a thin layer that reflects sunlight to space. These aerosols are like a temporary shield, much like the ozone layer to reduce and reflect the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth. Research suggests that stratospheric aerosol injection could potentially have unintended consequences. Because the shield is only temporary, the ozone layer may suffer with this new, more powerful shield and may eventually deplete, so when the shield wears off, we have no layer to protect us from the harmful UV rays.

Space-Based Reflectors

Space-based reflectors have a similar approach to marine cloud brightening, but instead of being put in clouds, they are up in space. These reflectors involve placing large mirrors or reflective satellites in space to redirect a portion of sunlight away from the Earth. By adjusting the reflectivity or orientation of these reflectors, the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth’s surface could be controlled. However, the implementation of these space-based reflectors would require a huge amount of money, sending satellites and maintaining fuel, direction, and maybe many other factors that could go wrong. Potential space debris can cause minor imperfections in the mirror and could lead to huge costs if things do not go to plan.

Potential Benefits and Challenges

As mentioned with the many benefits of sun blocking, sun blocking techniques offer the potential to reduce global temperatures and mitigate the impacts of global warming. By using these techniques to reflect sunlight, these sun-blocking techniques can help reduce global temperatures and cool down the earth. With all these benefits, implementing sun-blocking techniques can have ethical or legal concerns, as these strategies have unintended consequences and these methods are mainly temporary and require huge costs and time to make perfect. This is not as good as fixing global warming from its root causes, such as reducing CO2 uses or recycling.

Conclusion

Sun-blocking techniques such as stratospheric aerosol injection, marine cloud brightening, and space-based reflectors are promising methods to help reduce global warming and reduce global temperatures. With most of these methods, they cost a ton and require lots of time to perfect, with all this there will always be unintended consequences and potential risks, and test if these are long-term viable techniques. They also possess ethical and legal concerns.

If you are concerned about global warming, reducing time in the car and reducing plastic use is a great way to reduce rising temperatures, step by step, if everyone can help contribute a bit to help reduce temperatures and help solve the biggest crisis this century.
